ONLINE TEST

For these additional 10 tiebreaker questions, competitors will be asked to not only type in their answer, but also show as many steps of their work as possible. If there are multiple ties, competitors who show and explain their solutions the best will be given the tie-breaking advantage.

Medical Spelling – Guideline Modifications for Virtual ILC 2021:

ROUND ONE TEST

  5. A tiebreaker paragraph will be added to the online test. Competitors will be asked to retype a paragraph and correct the spelling errors. An additional extra essay question asking competitors to share about their participating in the Medical Spelling competitive event has also been added.   See a sample HERE.

ROUND TWO SPELL-DOWN

  1. Top Scoring competitors from round one will advance to round two for a live spelldown over Zoom
  2. For a seamless event experience, competitors should download Zoom prior to VILC to the device they plan to use for competition.
  3. Competitors should change / setup the “Display Name” in the Zoom account they plan to use so that it matches the name used for conference registration. Using the same name will ensure event staff recognizes you, and will admit you seamlessly into the live event.
  4. Round Two finalists’ names will be posted within the Virtual Conference Platform, called  Communique. Competitors will need to login to Communique to view the round two listing. It is the competitor’s responsibility to check the Virtual Conference Platform for the round two posting list, and to know when they are expected to meet with the judges.
  5. Along with the round two finalists’ names, individual appointment times will be posted. This is the scheduled time each competitor will present to the judges.
  6. The round two posting list will also contain a SPECIFIC ZOOM LINK to use for their assigned appointment time.
  7. 10 minutes before their scheduled appointment time, competitors should click on the Zoom meeting link from the round two posting list and be prepared to present to a panel of judges.
  8. HOSA Competitive Event Staff will be on each Zoom link with competitors and judges, to help ensure everything runs smoothly.
  9. Most events will utilize a main zoom room where all competitors will test audio, ensure they are in the correct event, etc. Then, breakout rooms within Zoom will be used and each competitor will be placed in a breakout room to meet with judges.
  10. Each breakout room will also have an event Timer who will be responsible for notifying the competitor of time remaining.
  11. Once admitted to the Zoom meeting, competitors will be given two practice terms.  The practice terms are to ensure everyone’s technology is working and to allow the competitor to ensure they understand the format for the spell-down with judges.   
  12. Numbers will not be drawn from a fish bowl.  All competitors will be given the same list of 15 words, in the same order.  The words get progressively harder as the competitor continues down the list.
  13. Competitors will continue spelling until they miss a word – some competitors may misspell the first word, and be out, while others my continue spelling for two, three, four words, etc.  The maximum number of words that will be offered to a competitor is 15.  If a competitor spells all 15 words correctly, they will be stopped and judges will move-on to the next competitor.  If multiple competitors spell all the words correctly, then the round 1 test and tiebreakers will be used to break the tie.
  14. Taber’s audio glossary will be used to pronounce each term for competitors, so all competitors hear exactly the same pronunciation. The terms will be played through Zoom using a dedicated website. View a sample HERE.
  15. The same rules will apply as described in the original event guidelines regarding definitions, pronunciations, and time allowed to spell each word.
  16. Video capability is required for this event over Zoom.
  17. If competitors have trouble connecting to the Zoom Meeting, call the CE Help Line immediately at 888-345-9942.
  18. If a competitor gets logged off in the middle of the event for some reason, immediately try connecting to the Zoom link again to re-enter. If that doesn’t work, keep trying and call the CE Help Line immediately at 888-231-6403.

Dress Code: As Future Health Professionals, HOSA Members should present themselves in a professional manner for all live events as part of the HOSA Virtual ILC 2021; however, dress code bonus points will not be awarded this year.

Health Career Exploration – Guideline Modifications for Virtual ILC 2021:

ONLINE TEST

  1. The test can be taken at any point within the listed four-hour testing time frame above. Competitors must be logged in before the timeframe expires, as after the testing window closes no late tests will be accepted. 
  2. The test will take place online. Go to https://testing.hosa.org/ to access the testing system. Login credentials will be emailed directly to competitors between June 8th-9th. If the competitor does not have an email on file, the login information will be sent to their state advisor for distribution. If you have not received your login credentials by June 10th, contact your State Advisor.
  3. All tests are open book / open note (competitors may not use other people for help).
  4. Testing time limit remains 60 minutes to complete 50 multiple-choice questions.
  5. The tiebreaker questions will be administered as explained in the original event guidelines. 
  6. Tests can be taken on a smartphone, tablet, or computer, although the best testing experience will be from a computer. If you have any issues logging in or accessing online testing please email hosatesting@gmail.com or call the CE Help Line immediately at 888-345-9942.
