HOSA Week 2012 November 5-11

HOSA Week 2012 November 5-11

The following article was written by the Daniel Boone High School HOSA chapter from Tennessee HOSA. Kelly Wagner, advisor, and her members participate annually in HOSA Week.

HOSA Week is a wonderful opportunity to promote health science students, the mission of HOSA and service to others.  Our chapter plans activities throughout the week that encourage unity and service.

Our chapter officers determine the activities for the week and work closely with members to make the plan a reality.  Each year we have the same basic plan but with varied activities. We have daily guest speakers. Officers use their leadership and communication skills to find, contact and invite local healthcare workers into our classroom.  Our fall blood drive is always held during HOSA Week. This allows us to educate the student body about the importance of blood donation and what a difference it can make to someone else.  We also use this week to thank others for their service to the community. We recognize veterans working in the school system by making candy for them and giving them a handwritten thank you card. Another group we recognize is local healthcare workers.  We make and deliver goody bags to local agencies. Teamwork is developed through committees coming up with a plan and developing the logistics to complete the task. During the week, we also take the opportunity to bring awareness to and raise money for our current national service project.  In the past, we have sold smoothies, penny wars between classes and participated in a faculty vs. HOSA members volleyball game.

The service opportunities also provide social opportunities.  We have a bonfire to make the candy and goody bags, as well as, have fun and get to know each other better. Socials are held after school. The hot chocolate social is always a favorite. We continue our fun with daily dress up days.  Some examples are scrub day, career day and HOSA t-shirt day. We also involve serving others with our socials. Sometimes we may eat after school and then go to the local animal shelter to walk the dogs.  We have also cooked and delivered meals to the Ronald McDonald house.

Regardless of the activities, we always strive to promote service to others and have fun as a group.
