HOSA Rising to the Moment: A Message From HOSA’s International President

Friends,

Here’s hoping everyone has been enjoying the start of the new year and staying warm this winter (here in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, we were especially warm in the 80 degree “winter” weather last week!)

As we enter the month of March, how happy and excited I am to share, on behalf of HOSA’s International Executive Council, that State Conference season is upon us! Your International Executive Council is excited and pumped to attend and travel to 15+ HOSA Chartered Associations this state conference season. From bringing remarks and greetings from HOSA-Future Health Professionals, conducting workshops and supporting competitive events, to networking with members and advisors and making lifelong friendships and connections, there is no doubt we are looking forward to seeing HOSA members from across the world in the coming weeks. Personally for me, I look forward to traveling to Washington HOSA, Ohio HOSA, Alaska HOSA, and my home state of North Carolina HOSA! The rest of the team is equally excited about the conferences they are attending…

… each HOSA member that has attended a conference knows the feeling you have at a general session – how you feel competing – talking with fellow HOSA members – enjoying the time with your chapter and friends – and what it feels like to be waiting patiently (and maybe a bit anxiously) to see if your name is going to be called as a “finalist.”

We all know that HOSA boasts a robust international competitive events program with Competitive Events Director Bergen Morehouse at the helm. It is my sincere hope that our HOSA-Future Health Professionals members are making the most of Competitive Events experiences and opportunities. For those of you competing in the coming months, here’s hoping you know of and are able to take advantage of the following resources:

HOSA Competitive Events General Rules and Regulations

  • All competitors are held to these general rules and regulations! It is a great idea to read and understand these general rules and regulations prior to competing!

2022-2023 HOSA Competitive Event Guidelines

  • Definitely be sure to know the event guidelines for your HOSA Competitive Event prior to competing!
  • Note that guidelines change from year to year – make sure the document you are referring to is the most updated set of guidelines for your event
  • Each set of guidelines will have key resources, study materials, potential sample questions and problems, etc. for reference as you aim to prepare for your event!

Other Useful Competitive Event Tools

  • Any additional questions? Feel free to refer to other useful competitive event tools, linked above. These resources will prove to be especially helpful as you prepare to compete!

As you prepare for an upcoming conference or event, always be sure to take to heart the following tips and tricks!

  1. Review the above resources! Know your guidelines! They are critical in succeeding on your event and will help enhance your HOSA competitive event experience.
  2. Practice, practice, practice
  3. Be sure to dress to impress (as per your guidelines) and bring all relevant equipment, materials, items, etc. that are necessary for your event!
  4. Show up early. Scope out the room the night before so there are no surprises the day of your competitive event!
  5. Believe in yourself! You have done all that you can to prepare for your event, and believing in your abilities – capacities – and knowledge is especially important in ensuring you are confident!

I thought I would also share, though, because we are in the midst of the State Conference season, that HOSA is about a whole lot more than what HOSA members do at a specific conference – or in a specific Competitive Event.

It is my sincere hope that regardless of if you are attending an upcoming spring HOSA conference – regardless of if you are competing in a HOSA competitive event – that you realize the breadth and depth of opportunities available to you because you made the decision to be involved in HOSA-Future Health Professionals: the largest career and technical student organization that is 100% health! You are part of a community of over 250,000+ like-minded peers passionate about pursuing health – and you have access to resources and opportunities like HOSA’s Service Project, professional development and growth opportunities, work-based learning opportunities, scholarships, leadership development, and so much more!

That’s why it was an honor and privilege for the IEC, along with the HOSA community, to celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) month this past February. HOSA members, advisors, partners, and sponsors embody what Health Science Education and CTE are all about.

We share our thanks for your continued involvement in and support of HOSA-Future Health Professionals.

AND… most of all, it is an honor and privilege to personally invite you — and over 11,000 members, advisors, partners, sponsors, exhibitors, and guests — to the 2023 International Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas!

The ILC is an amazing opportunity to:

  • Compete in events focused on building leadership and technical skills
  • Attend educational workshops, exhibits, and symposia presented by professionals
  • Meet people with similar interests from across the globe
  • Attend fun, exciting general sessions with the opportunity to be recognized for your hard work!

Your International Executive Council is so very excited as our HOSA family comes together this June 21-24, 2023. We look forward to celebrating you, your accomplishments, and your aspirations in Dallas, Texas!

With love — today, tomorrow, and always,
Kartik
