Alexis Okolo, Clinical Research Project Manager, Master of Cell and Molecular Biology, Texas Ex, and HOSA alumna, began her journey into healthcare during her sophomore year of high school in her hometown, Wylie, Texas.

“I was in the pre-health club at my school, and our advisor encouraged us to join [HOSA]. I got involved because I saw it as a way to engage in eye-opening activities, get more volunteer hours, and gain exposure to the pre-health world,” Okolo said.

Before long, Okolo participated in several competitions, with the Nursing Assistant competition standing out as a particularly memorable experience. Participating in this event became a highlight of the school year, offering not only the chance to hone practical skills but also the opportunity to connect with HOSA members from different regions.

“Meeting so many different people from all over and learning from their experiences and perspectives is one of the best parts of healthcare,” she remarked.

Mentorship within HOSA played a significant role in shaping Okolo’s trajectory. After her success in the Nursing Assistant competition, her junior-year HOSA advisor encouraged her to pursue a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Under this mentor’s guidance, she applied for and completed the CNA course offered at her high school.

Reflecting on this pivotal experience, Okolo noted, “That course was extremely impactful on my career today. I was able to gain exposure to so many healthcare settings, which eventually led me to discover the world of clinical research.”

Initially, Okolo aspired to become a pediatrician. Motivated by her passion for early childhood development, her work at a daycare, and the CNA certification, it seemed to be the most natural progression in her career.

However, as she gained more insight through shadowing and further exploration, she realized her passion for child development did not translate to the day-to-day responsibilities of a pediatrician. This realization led to a difficult but necessary decision to pivot—a challenge that many future health professionals endure.

“The hardest part was accepting that I wouldn’t follow through on a pathway I had set for myself so long ago,” Okolo shared.

Despite this, she found ways to continue advocating for children’s development through research and volunteer work, which remains central to her career today.

HOSA’s influence was crucial in helping Okolo navigate this transition. The chapter encouraged members to explore a variety of professions through guest speakers and independent research.

This exploration eventually led Okolo to discover clinical research, which ultimately evolved into clinical research project management. Each stage of Okolo’s journey, from high school to graduate school and beyond, built upon the values, mentorship, and lessons learned in HOSA.

Okolo’s advice to current HOSA members is clear: explore all possibilities, seek hands-on experiences, and remain open to where the journey might lead.

“Be persistent, network, and don’t give up—you’ve got this!” Okolo said.
