Everyone knows the weeks of open-ended days given to students in June, July and August are an opportunity to kick back, relax, and de-stress after a busy school year. However, if you aren't careful, you may wind up inadvertently spending your summer days gaining valuable life experiences. Here's a list to help you determine what will occupy your time this summer.
10 Ways to Waste Your Summer Vacation
1. DO NOT begin thinking about your goals for the next school year. Do not even jot down an idea or two, or think of what you might like to have achieved by this time next year.
2. DO NOT limit your social media use in any way. Be sure your Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat accounts see regular, daily use. And if you don't text often enough, you may lose dexterity in your thumbs.
3. DO NOT look for any type of summer employment. Work experience builds confidence, responsibility and independence… Summer is for sleeping, not gaining life experience.
4. DO NOT volunteer in your community in any way. Colleges and employers really like seeing volunteer experiences on your applications, and this is the opposite of wasting your summer.
5. DO NOT read books of any kind this summer. Nonfiction, fiction, classics, best sellers — all will hinder your ability to truly waste time by keeping your brain active and engaged. And if you do slip and read a little, please do not discuss it with anyone else.
6. DO limit your social engagements to FaceTime and Skype whenever possible. Face to face conversations develop social intelligence, the ability to read body language, and listening skills.
7. DO sit on the couch as often as possible. Preferably with the television on, your phone and tablet nearby, and the shades drawn. Exposure to sunlight helps you feel more alert and energetic, and may lead to you achieving something rather than wasting your vacation.
8. To follow number 7, DO limit outdoor activity to laying on beach towels, deck chairs and hammocks. Please do not exercise – the endorphins released will have an effect similar to sunlight, not to mention the strength and character building that could happen as the result of hard work.
9. DO look for every possible thing wrong with your life. Nitpicking and complaining will keep you from feeling motivated to make positive changes in your life. This is essential to truly wasting time.
10. DO stay home as much as possible. Traveling to new places will widen your lens of the world, and may instill a desire to travel more extensively. New cultures, different people and natural beauty will only make you more curious and invested in serving the world we inhabit.
If you follow these ten steps thoroughly, your summer is guaranteed to successfully be a complete and total waste.
