“Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine.” – Alan Turing (via The Imitation Game)
Six years ago, Gowthamm Mandala joined HOSA simply to explore the medical field. What he found was far more than an organization. It was a family, one that welcomed him with open arms, shaped him with new challenges, and inspired him to not just chase his dreams, but to dream bigger. It became the place where his purpose began to take form: not only as a future health professional, but as a leader committed to standing beside others.
One moment, just five minutes, changed everything. At a state conference, Gowthamm noticed someone sitting alone in a crowded ballroom. Everyone else had their people, their teams, their energy. But this one person, quiet and distant, didn’t. So he chose to sit beside them. They didn’t talk about anything profound, but they laughed. They connected. Years later, that same member found him again while he was campaigning for International office. They remembered. That moment reminded Gowthamm what leadership should be: personal, enduring, and rooted in genuine connection. Because sometimes, the smallest decisions, like choosing to sit beside someone, become the most enduring.
To him, leadership doesn’t mean standing at the front, it means standing with. His goal as a Postsecondary/Collegiate Board Representative is to know his people, to remember every face and every story, and to ensure no voice goes unheard. Whether you’re from a large chapter or a quiet corner of a rural community, Gowthamm believes representation is a promise: to never forget you.
He serves through listening, kindness, and action, but above all, through presence. Always a conversation away from being a friend, Gowthamm leads as a member first. Someone who walks into every space with open ears and an open heart.
Outside of HOSA, Gowthamm finds joy in the in-between moments, scribbling reflections into his journal after long days, or curating the perfect playlist filled with R&B, indie, folk, and bossa-pop. He loves exploring cultures through food, stories, and conversation, and whether he’s playing cricket and pickleball with friends or deep in a novel that challenges him, he’s always chasing connection. He’s also a fan of bombarding his friends and family with pictures of his two cats: Simba and Nala. And when the world feels overwhelming, you’ll find him rewatching his favorite movies and shows, not for lack of options, but because they’ve become a comforting part of who he is. He finds joy in the little things, and peace in making others smile.
As HOSA celebrates its historic 50th year, Gowthamm is honored to be part of the team guiding this milestone moment. He believes Team 50 isn’t just here to serve, it’s here to ignite. To amplify member voices, dismantle barriers, and make space for every future health professional to rise, regardless of background, ability, or identity.
He serves not for the spotlight, but for the spark, that flicker of connection, of belief, of a smile shared between friends. And if even one member can walk away feeling seen, heard, and inspired to lead… he’ll know he’s done something right.
