Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (Lab Week) is an annual celebration of medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in health care and patient advocacy!
Medical Lab Week 2025: April 20–26, 2025
Meet Isak Schmidley — a trailblazer for the next generation of medical laboratory professionals. At just 16 years old, Schmidley became the youngest person to earn an ASCP BOC credential, passing the Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS(ASCP) exam while still in high school. Now working as a medical lab scientist at a hospital in Louisiana and enrolled in graduate-level college courses, Schmidley is already making an impact in the field. He proudly endorses the value of ASCP BOC credentials for opening doors and accelerating professional growth.
As we celebrate #LabWeek2025, Schmidley’s story highlights the importance of encouraging young people to explore careers in the lab. That’s why we’re proud to partner with HOSA–Future Health Professionals to help future lab leaders find their path, earn credentials, and join the mission of advancing healthcare through the medical laboratory.
Now it’s your turn! Whether you’re a HOSA member or a middle or high school student interested in exploring the world of medical labs, there are plenty of ways to get involved: participate in a local lab competition, visit a medical laboratory for a behind-the-scenes tour, try out hands-on activities or research projects in lab sciences. Share your experiences using #WeAreASCPBOC or #BOCLabWeek2025 and inspire others to explore the incredible world of medical laboratory science!
Watch Isak Schmidley share his thoughts on earning the ASCP BOC credential.
