2024 International Leadership Conference Highlights

HOSA-Future Health Professionals celebrated the 2023-2024 membership year by having over 12,600 members, advisors, judges, and guests attending HOSA’s 47th Annual International Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas, June 26-29, 2024. HOSA was represented by 54 chartered associations including American Samoa, Canada, China, Korea, and Puerto Rico!

Special congratulations to all HOSA champions who were recognized on stage at the ILC – an outstanding achievement! 2023-2024 was an outstanding year and, together, all HOSA members were encouraged to Dare to Create!

ILC Highlights

The week was filled with excitement and opportunities for members to come to compete, learn, and share their HOSA experiences.  Conference highlights included:

  • 92 health-related competitive events represented by 11,365 competitors
  • 145 educational workshops
  • 165 exhibitors including 3 interactive tournaments with finalists recognized at HOSA’s Recognition Session
  • NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program) Ceremony
  • Hilarity for Charity’s, Sneak Peek of their new film “Taking Care
  • APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) and HOSA members collaborated on Go Baby Go to adapt toy cars, helping young children with disabilities gain independence.
  • American Red Cross hosted Adult CPR/AED Training sessions and certified 69 HOSA members.
  • HOSA’s own Alumna, Dr. Rayne Rouce, Pediatric Oncologist, Physician Scientist, and Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, was the keynote speaker at the Opening Session and left students cheering and joining Dr. Rouce in her final “science rap.”
  • The blood drive hosted by America’s Blood Center and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center collected 384 units, equivalent to saving over 1,000 lives.

Board Chair, Cindy Beck, celebrated the 2024 ILC as HOSA’s largest conference in history.  Chairman Beck did an outstanding job leading all the meetings – sharing HOSA’s conference theme of “Dare to Create!”

HOSA-100 International Advisory Council Recognition

HOSA welcomed six new members to the HOSA-100 International Advisory Council:

Scholarships

At the HOSA 2024 International Leadership Conference, HOSA awarded 103 outstanding HOSA members, represented by 35 sponsors, $122,500 in scholarships.  An additional $3,249,200 was awarded in state HOSA scholarships for a grand total of $3,247,100; reinforcing HOSA’s commitment to educational advancement and professional progression in healthcare.

Hall of Fame

HOSA inducted four outstanding individuals into the HOSA Hall of Fame. The HOSA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals and companies who have rendered outstanding service to HOSA, health and biomedical science education, and the health industry.

This year’s Hall of Fame members included:

  • HOSA Advisor – Tonya Pennebaker, California
  • HOSA Alumni – Shawnee Chaudhury, New Jersey
  • HOSA Alumni – Zhehao “Leo” Zhang, China

HOSA Heroes Recognized

HOSA was proud to recognize two groups for outstanding work that embodies what it means to be a future health professional!

Andrea Piedra, Alabama HOSA

Andrea is credited with saving the life of a seven-year-old boy who was choking and needing his airway cleared to dislodge candy to be able to breathe.

Carson Coryer, Colorado HOSA

Carson noticed an unresponsive male on the side of the street and knew exactly what to do with his performing lifesaving CPR support and seeking paramedic action.  Even thought the man succumbed cardiac arrest, Carson was a hero in his efforts to save his life.

Goodheart-Willcox Outstanding Service Award

The Goodheart-Willcox Outstanding Service Award recognized three local HOSA chapter advisors, one from each HOSA region, who made exceptional contributions of local, regional, state, and national significance to the promotion, development, and progress of HOSA-Future Health Professionals.  HOSA thanks G-W Publisher for sponsoring this award.  The award recipients are:

  • Western Region — Kelly Jones, Corner Canyon High School, Utah HOSA
  • Central Region – Roshanda Alexander, Lawrence County Technology & Career Center, Mississippi HOSA

During the annual HOSA Business Session, the voting delegates elected eight knowledgeable and eager HOSA leaders to serve on the Executive Council.

The HOSA, Inc. Board of Directors elected three new members to the HOSA, Inc. Board of Directors who will meet on Saturday, February 3, 2024, in Southlake, Texas:

  • Eastern Region – State Advisor: Loretta Thompson (WV)
  • Health Science Supervisor/Teacher Educator: Nikki Bentley (GA)

Competitive Events

This year 11,365 competitors competed in 92 competitive events with an impressive participation of 653 industry partners, HOSA alumni, and professional associations, who contributed as judges. Prominent organizations such as the American Red Cross (ARC), American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the U.S. Army, HCA Healthcare, and CVS Health are key partners, ensuring a diverse range of expertise and high standards of excellence.
