HOSA: Future Health Professionals carries with it a long history of dedicated individuals who have nurtured our organization to what it is today. We now stand on tall shoulders that have come before us. Before HOSA was officially chartered as a national organization in 1976, at the third annual conference of the Texas Association of Health Occupations Students (TAHAS) in San Antonio, Texas, on March 14, 1975, AVA Vice President Wilma Gillespie presented the keynote address entitled "And There Will Be Others."

Today, we can claim the same truth, “And There Will Be Others.” Next year’s HOSA success depends on well we set up future leaders today. So what can we do today to ensure a fruitful HOSA chapter at our school next year?

1.  Identify HOSA Leaders in Your School

Graduating seniors should meet with under class students and discuss opportunities for HOSA growth. Students should feel empowered and a sense of responsibility for next year’s chapter.

2.  Make a HOSA In Review Video

Sometimes it is difficult to explain all the wonderful aspects about HOSA: Future Health Professionals. Produce a video by those that participated in HOSA this year that can be passed along to potential members next year. Capture the moments that made joining worth your time.

3.  Log What Worked… and What Did Not

We do not always learn what to do from those who have gone before us. Many times we learn what not to based on others’ mistakes. Current HOSA members should make a list of projects that succeeded and those worth repeating. In addition, include the discoveries not worth attempting.

4.  Set the Date for the First HOSA Meeting

School is a busy place when the new year begins. If we are not wise, HOSA may get shifted to the back burner. Set place, agenda, time, and the date for the first HOSA meeting when school returns. By doing so, it will keep HOSA in the forefront of members’ minds over the summer as they plan out the HOSA year. In addition, it will alleviate the chance HOSA drops on the priority list.

5.  Review Section C of the HOSA Handbook

Most members are familiar with Section B; the event guidelines. However, one of HOSA’s greatest resources is Sections A and C of the HOSA Handbook. Section C is designed to help HOSA chapters manage their activities. Review Section C to help you late out a Project of Work for next year.

By making a little effort at the end of this year, you can place next year’s HOSA members in a strong position for a fantastic and successful year. Because if there’s one thing you can count on, There Will Be Others.
