You no doubt have a reason for joining HOSA and entering the world of health. We all do. For many, an experience from the past makes such an impression on them that they decide to commit their lives to healthcare. Others (including yours truly) initially discover health careers based on their academic skills & interests. As students become interested in these careers and begin to lay the groundwork for their health education, they learn more about what it means to be a health professional.
Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Oklahoma HOSA State Leadership Conference. It was the first time I’ve been able to attend my home state’s SLC since 2013, so it was wonderful to reconnect with past state officers and see HOSA competition at the state level.
HOSA-Future Health Professionals, represented by Candy Leopold, Minnesota State Advisor and MRC Coordinator, served as a panelist at the MRC Town Hall Session during the 2017 Preparedness Summit in Atlanta, Georgia. The focus of the Summit is to explore the factors driving change in our world, analyze how they will impact the future of public health preparedness, and identify opportunities we have today to drive action toward meeting our future needs.
HOSA-Future Health Professionals is pleased to announce the 2017 Public Health Leadership Scholar participants. The week-long seminar is hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) with support from the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General (OSG) and the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS).

Southlake, TX--On April 12, STEM Premier released the annual national ranking of the top 100 STEM high school students. The list is comprised of high-achieving juniors and seniors from across the country with STEM Premier profiles that were rated and ranked the highest based on over 30 profile metrics including achievements, experiences, and more. The final selection includes Presidential Service Award Winners, National Merit Scholars, Girl Scouts, and members of associations such as HOSA-Future Health Professionals, and more.
Every year Oklahoma HOSA recognizes individuals who have given their time and talents to the members and our conferences. This year Oklahoma presented the 2017 Oklahoma HOSA Honorary Member to Capt. Mike Brode.
Mike joined his local HOSA chapter at the Academy for Technology and Academics in Conway, SC in August 2006 when he started the school's pre-med program as a junior. In 2007, Mike was thrilled to represent South Carolina at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando where he also competed in the EMT competition.
HOSA partner, ANATOMY IN CLAY®, invites local chapters to submit their favorite classroom activity using Anatomy in Clay Learning Systems and Models. HOSA's partner, CVS Health has just announced an exciting opportunity for pharmacy school students--CVS's first-ever Spanish Immersion Internship Program. The 2017 Spanish Immersion Internship provides the CVS and non-CVS intern the opportunity to participate in the care of patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions, focusing on the Hispanic community and utilizing the Spanish language.
Up until now, this blog has mostly focused on my journey to becoming a physician. I know, however, that the world of health (and thus the interests of HOSA members) reaches far beyond patient care. To that end, I’m excited to begin branching out and interviewing extraordinary people who are impacting health and medicine through work in many different fields. I couldn’t think of a better person with which to begin this series.
Of all the topics about which I’ve written so far, none has been as dreaded as this. Students in middle and high school receive countless opinions on how they should decide what they want to do “when they grow up.” The stress of choosing a career path is substantial and many times overwhelming. I, too, have an opinion, and so I will share it with you today.
BELLE CHASSE - A high school freshman and HOSA member will be packing his bags and heading to Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration. It's a dream come true for a teenager, who has known since grammar school, that he wants to run for public office. You may not know who Peyton Pipher, 14, is, but give him time. Since fifth grade, he's had a passion for leadership, politics and the news.
The HOSA-Future Health Professionals is proud to announce the 2017 HOSA, Inc. Chair, Brock Rops, who was recently elected at the annual Board of Directors Meeting held in Southlake, Texas. Other officers elected: Dr. Peggy Enslen, Chair-Elect (DE), and Janet Villarreal, Board Secretary (TX).
HOSA is excited to work with NAMI for the next two years in raising funds and awareness for mental illness. Texas HOSA has stepped up and is challenging it's members to the Popsicle Challenge in order to "Freeze Mental Illness in its Tracks." SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - A Palmdale High School attempts to set the world record for climbing the equivalent height of Mount Everest at an indoor gym. The educator wants to inspire a former student to return to school after she survived a shooting two years ago.
"He's always out to help other people,” said Jason Wells, a longtime friend of Tim Klein, a Palmdale High School teacher. “Everything he's doing, he's always thinking about the people around him."
